Introduction
Autism Awareness has a simple goal: to improve the lives of all Australians on the spectrum and the families who love them. Their mission is to ensure autistic individuals, and their families, have access to free, credible, evidence-based information, resources and tools to empower them to support themselves or their loved ones on the spectrum. They also provide targeted educational programmes to families, professionals and the broader community. They support inclusion for people on the autism spectrum.
The Challenge
Despite growing awareness, individuals on the autism spectrum and their families often face significant challenges. My role was to take real imagery of individuals doing day to day activities, show interactions with family, also show some of the challenges that they face in everyday life. This was to enable further education via website images and blog images to complement the information on offer.
My Approach
After a thorough briefing from the team at AAA we found some suitable locations and manufactured scenarios that would suit the kinds of stories and situations they needed to show. Examples of these situations are things like cooking, navigating school, catching public transpost and interating with other family members.
There were times where we had to go with the flow of what individuals could do on the day, and sometimes we had to change the shot list and brief as we went.
Impact
Since our collaboration, Autism Awareness has seen a significant uptick in community engagement:
Their former gaps in their website and blogs are now filled with images that depict the message they are getting across. Also social posts have images that go with their story or article.

We have hired him multiple times for events, fundraising campaigns, lifestyle imagery and headshots across both still images and videography. I would highly recommend. Conclusion
Over several shoots in different loactions including Sydney, Gold Coast, Canberra and Brisbane, we have managed to gather a large amount of photo assets for AAA to use. Our continued relationship is wonderful and I look forward to more shoots in the coming year.
