Whether you’re shooting a high-stakes conference at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney or a fast-paced networking night in the CBD, lighting can change in a heartbeat. One second you’re under dim chandeliers, the next you’re near a bright window overlooking the harbour. To capture those professional moments perfectly, you need to master your flash.
But for Sydney event photographers, the age-old question remains: TTL or Manual?
TTL: The "Auto-Pilot" for Fast-Paced Sydney Events
TTL (Through-The-Lens) is essentially "auto-mode" for your flash. Your camera calculates the distance and ambient light, telling the flash exactly how much power to output.
When to use it: Perfect for "roaming" photography at cocktail parties or crowded gala dinners where the distance between you and your subjects is constantly shifting.
The Sydney Pro Tip: Use Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC). If a dark venue like a heritage building in The Rocks is causing your flash to blow out faces, dial it down to $-1.0$ to keep the skin tones looking natural.
Manual: The King of Consistency for Professional Headshots
Manual Flash gives you 100% control. You set the power (e.g., $1/16$) and it stays there, regardless of the room's ambient light.
When to use it: This is my go-to for Instant Event Headshots and media walls. When I’m set up at a Sydney corporate office, Manual ensures every single executive portrait looks identical, making the final gallery look incredibly polished.
The Pro Tip: Once you find the "sweet spot" for a specific venue, lock it in. It saves battery life—crucial for those long 8-hour Sydney conferences.
The Verdict?
For most Sydney corporate event photography, I recommend a Hybrid Approach. Use TTL to find your exposure quickly as the sun sets over the city, then switch to Manual once you’ve dialled in the perfect look for the evening.
